Work Packages

The ROAM project is divided into eight work packages (WP). In addition to the project management (WP1) and the dissemination and exploitation of the results (WP8), there are six technical work packages. Each of these forms an integral part of the overall project. All the work packages are shared among the partners contributing their specific know-how. Each work package and task has a designated, responsible work package or task leader to coordinate the work.

WP1: Project Management – Leader: CNIT

This WP deals with Project management activities.

WP2: Specifications – Leader: HWDU

WP2 will be responsible for determining the specifications of the OAM devices (OAM fibre and integrated components for OAM generation and processing) and of the systems exploiting the OAM devices: OAM division multiplexing system and OAM-based switching system.

WP3: OAM Mode Transmission in Optical Fibres – Leader: UNIVBRIS

WP3 is focused on the issues related with OAM mode transmission in optical fibres. The fibre as OAM communication channels will be studied and characterized, including optical equalization methods for mode coupling suppression. A method for optimizing the coupling between OAM fibre and OAM integrated devices will be established.

WP4: Development of the OAM transceiver and Networking Components – Leader: UoG

WP4 is dedicated to the design, implementation and characterization of the OAM transceiver and networking components. The components will be implemented on the Silicon technology platform, which will provide a route for mass production. A strong focus will be put on the optimisation of the power consumption and reconfiguration speed of the components. The packaging of the integrated OAM components will be also carried out in this WP.

WP5: OAM Division Multiplexing Communications in Fibre – Leader: HWDU

WP5 will study the transmission of multiplexed OAM modes in fibre. Models for the OAM signal and for the crosstalk noise will be carried out together with methods for suppressing crosstalk noise. A test bed will be setup for the transmission of multiplexed OAM modes by exploiting the OAM fibre developed in WP3 and the integrated OAM components developed in WP4. The transmission of 10 multiplexed OAM modes will be demonstrated.

WP6: OAM Domain-based Networking Schemes and Techniques – Leader: CNIT

WP6 is focused on the design, implementation and characterization of OAM-based networking schemes. The integrated components developed in WP4 and the OAM fibre developed in WP3 will be exploited in this WP. In the first task, schemes for OAM mode conversion will be implemented. Then routing schemes will be realized, to demonstrate the ability to spatially switch the OAM modes. A task will be focused on the study of two-dimensional switching based on OAM and wavelength domain. Finally a two-dimensional OAM and wavelength-based switch will be designed and implemented to demonstrate the switching of 10 OAM modes, each one carrying 16 wavelengths.

WP7: OAM-based Transmission and Switching Demonstration – Leader: PSNC

WP7, the final technical WP, is responsible for the implementation of field trials both for OAM multiplexed communication in fibre and OAM-based switching in actual networking and data-centre scenarios. The field trials will be carried out by exploiting the infrastructures and equipment of PSNC and HWDU.

WP8: Dissemination and Exploitation – Leader: IBM

WP8 will take care of the dissemination and exploitation activities. The former will involve all the Partners, while the latter will mainly implicate the effort of the industrial Partners.
